COVID-19 is changing how everyone does business and fast. Updated social distancing measures could impact claim documentation – which ultimately could impact how claims are paid.
Some carriers have gone completely digital and are having the policyholders evaluate the damage with photos and videos. New technology involves smartphone apps that allow adjusters to remotely direct the customer in real-time to inspect and document the damaged areas of their property as the basis for an estimate. While this has worked well with auto claims, it’s not good for property damage claims.
A homeowner being responsible for documenting damage to their home is asking for trouble. Policyholders are not as skilled as roofers and adjusters to properly identify damage. In some cases, adjusters aren’t either. After Hurricane Sandy, almost 150,000 claims had to be reopened due to out of town adjusters missing damage. While desktop adjusting is great for practicing social distancing, it can cause a prolonged claim which may cause you and your homeowner time and money.
